Alma’s work wins national media award and praised by judges as ‘original’ and ‘wonderful’

Luke Beardsworth, Alma director and Editor (North) of The Lead, collects award with Natalie Morris

We’re delighted to tell you our work is award-winning.

Alma played a major part in scooping a national journalism award for The Lead North initiative we’ve been spear-heading.

Since launching in late 2023 the project has seen high quality news and features delivered through newsletters, Substack publishing and new local newspapers across ten towns and regions across the North of England.

And our work was hailed by judges at Press Gazette’s Future of Media and Technology awards as: “a wonderful example of local news journalism fighting back with original reporting, and an eye to rebuilding a local news ecosystem fit for the 21st century.”

In my role as Editor (North) for The Lead, I was in London to collect the award, along with The Lead’s senior editor Natalie Morris.

The Lead’s portfolio is currently publishing in Blackpool, Teesside, Lancashire, Calderdale and Southport and picked up the win in the Best Regional/Specialist Newsletter category.

Our collaboration with The Lead has ensured in-depth storytelling about important local topics sees the light needed from a journalist to ask questions and investigate what’s happening.

We deliver the northern editions to inboxes twice per week and, alongside the investigative reporting that is produced in collaboration with a small network of freelance journalists, we also spotlight the excellent journalism still being produced in newsrooms.

It’s been great to work with journalists and organisations across the North of England on this award-winning set of newsletters – our thanks to everyone who has been involved.

Alongside supporting The Lead North titles, Alma director Ed Walker works closely with the team heading up The Lead’s national coverage.

Our work with The Lead has continued to adapt and evolve during the past two years and it’s a great example of how Alma’s skills and experiences can enhance an existing publication and team.
